Alera's Funds Helping Pulau Ketam Dog Rescue

Got this shocking news on my youtube message box few days ago. Below is the exact word from a youtube friend.

Dear Ngo, I just got this on Facebook and I remembered You are from Malaysia and I figured it cant hurt if I show u this:
Hundreds of dogs transported to an uninhabited island to fend for themselvesShare
Today at 2:26am
http://www.mycen.com.my/rescue/
"Residents of Pulau Ketam, Malaysia came up with this "brilliant" idea to abandon hundreds of dogs on an uninhabited island that has absolutely no food, and left the dogs to fend for themselves. The dogs are eating the carcasses of the ones among them that didn't survive, and they're all dying a slow, painful death ....... (The residents actually transported the dogs there!) It never fails to disgust me how horrible humans can be. I was born in Malaysia so I know how most animals are treated out there, but I'm still shocked at how a human being can simply discard another creature without a second thought." - Val Pavlik http://www.mycen.com.my/sightings/sightings030509_pulau_ketam_dogs.html PLEASE HELP THIS MAN IF U CAN; I will also give him your Link here... ONE LOVE adembasou

Please anyone out there if you care enough to support Sabrina Yeap and her team, any amount regardless big or small would definitely make a different on the rescue mission. Check their Updates HERE.

Dog Tied Up 24/7 To Palm Tree

This happened in Kulim, Kedah state. A good buddy Adi Kartri shot the first video below and told me about this. Video above was taken yesterday. We have reported this cruelty act to the local authority and they went this morning to warn the owner. The dog now is inside the compound of the house. If you would like to thank the officers, they are Mr Azaha and Mr Surender, 604 508 4879.

Thanks to Adi Kartri who shot this video, without him the dog probably still tied up to the palm tree outside : http://qik.com/video/1343085

Broken Hind Leg Dog ( Apple )

Received a call from Chong Kooi neighbor, Tracy and Nick. They are good Samaritans that willing to take this 6 months old female puppy if I am not mistaken. Apple was hit by a motorcyclist few days ago. They brought her to immediately to the first vet nearby their area and nothing much could be done except giving her some pain killer. :(

They went for another one and got the X-ray done and the same answer was given, thats why I received a call since last time we helped out a dog name Lucky and Chong Kooi is his guardian. Link below to help you remember :

*update on Lucky : HE IS MISSING SINCE LAST WEEK!

Back to Apple, she is now at my vet boarding place and surgery will be carried out anytime. I will use some of Alera fund just to help out abit.

Angel's Hernia Surgery Updates

Phew! The surgery went well! Angel is now back to Stephanie and Callie's place. The vet said there is no need to stay at the clinic. However the vet did say it involved chest cavity and he already fixed it. Mmm...I am not too sure what that means. Anyone who can enlighten me regarding this would be very much appreciated. Furthermore her breathing will be a little shallow because her left lung collapsed due to the surgery and this will go back to normal in days. Photos above were shot by Stephanie.

Angel, The 3 Legged Dog

I got to know Angel through Joseph yesterday night. She ended up in SPCA Penang after found on the street. Someone practically 'dump' her there according to the SPCA. Angel has three legs and she is very adorable. Unfortunately she has a problem with hernia nearby his tummy area. Two good Samaritans who happened to be volunteers of the shelter fell in love with her and decided to adopt and foster her in their spacious apartment. I have used some of the Alera's fund to help Angel in her tomorrow hernia surgery.

Angel will be going to the vet recommended by SPCA and I am not allowed to go in there with video cam, arrr!. We just have to hope for the best. The good Samaritans also happened to be mother and daughter, Callie and Stephanie. They have a kind soul indeed as taking care of disable animals is a life time commitment. They have another dog named Princess. Hopefully Angel will be fine tomorrow. By the way Angel was a chosen name by Callie and Stephanie. Her shelter name is Charity.

Barbara Janssen's Shelter In Penang

Photo on the left is Barbara Janssen and she is from Germany. She has turned her house into a home shelter. The shelter has been running since August 2006 and we just found out lately from our local newspaper. The girl beside Barbara on the background is Sue, a volunteer in our local shelter.
Barbara has been rescuing homeless, injured and abandoned dogs whenever they came across her path. She feed rats and birds too! Isn't that wonderful! Throughout her rescue, many have been adopted and for those who are not lucky to find good homes, they are sure lucky enough to stay with Barbara for as long as they live. Barbara named each and everyone of them and treat them with much love! They are free to roam and sleep anywhere in the compound of the house. She has a helper name Sammy who help her walk the elder dogs once a week :)
We admire greatly for her work.

Limping Puppy ( Jojo ) Rehomed!

Khairul and I went to the vet this morning to get Jojo out and I already decided to bring him to SPCA but was still not very sure, you know as the shelter is not a no-kill shelter. That's why I kept on delaying and keep him at the vet. But eventually we have to get him out sooner or later. So today, after several sleepless nights and deep thinking, I made up my mind to bring Jojo to SPCA instead of releasing him back on the street where we first found him. Honestly, the street is not safe for him anyway and the chances he might get injured and caught by local council also very high. On the other hand, even though the shelter is not a no-kill shelter but at least he will have a place to stay and hopefully get adopted. Believe me, this was a very hard decision.

But you know what, all of this has over! Finally! Jojo finally got a NEW HOME!! This happened very fast actually. It's like this, while we were there, I was kind of delaying the time, I looked at Jojo and was thinking, he really needs a bath before going to the shelter, so I bath him and after that brought him down from top floor to outside the vet for potty. On my way out, I met a friend, Miss Leong, and she was asking me about Jojo. I told her the whole story and would have to bring Jojo to shelter and if anyone ever been to animal shelters before, you will know that not every dog or cat will survive there or find a good home. She was saddened by the story and like telling me not to bring Jojo to the shelter. She told me to wait and she went back inside the vet and came out with a couple of good Samaritans. They are Lim and Siew Choo. After explaining to the husband and wife about Jojo, they decided to give Jojo a home! Isn't that wonderful!

I drove Jojo in my car with Khairul, Miss Leong followed us from behind and off we went to Jojo's new home! The place is definitely a paradise for Jojo, big compound and 3 other pedigree dogs as new friends. Good thing about Lim and Siew Choo is that they do not cage or confine dogs in small crates! The dogs are free to run anywhere in the house! Both husband and wife also has been helping homeless dogs throughout their lives :)

Limping Puppy Spotted

Joseph messaged me about this limping puppy he spotted nearby his house yesterday night before Alera incident. After our dinner, Khairul and I went there to have a look. He was hiding under a van and we have tried to persuade him to come out by giving him some food. At first he didn't want to but finally he came out, got friendly with us and he was limping quite badly, but not as bad as Lucky though.

We were not able to take him back at that time. Anyway, Joseph was confident enough that he wouldn't run away as there's his roaming place. By the way, the place is very near to Joseph's house. Since I was bringing Alera to the vet this morning, I called Joseph to pick up the puppy in order to save time. He managed to pick him up and gave him a bath before both of them went to the vet.

The x-ray showed his hind leg has fractured a bit and slightly bend. No surgery is needed according to the doc and only resting will do and also some pain killer injection. I am not sure for how long he is going to be there but at least he has a temporary place to heal up properly and not mention a good shelter with food!

Limping Doggie Going Home Again.

Joseph and I went to the vet to fetch Lucky this evening. When I checked back the last video on Lucky, I have mentioned him as Jacky in the video, LOL, please forgive my typo error. I did that a lot lately, I think I need glasses.

Anyway, back to Lucky, the plate/pin has been removed but unfortunately he is not using his leg at all. You can see that on the video below. I am sad looking at him as you know, my main intention is to make him complete again. I guess I just need to accept he is not going back to norm again. From the chat I had with some friends on my ustream chat room, some had recommended massage and acupuncture. Unfortunately my vet doesn't provide such services. I already told Chong Kooi, the adopter to try loosen the joint slowly and gently by massaging it daily whenever he is free. I certainly hope he will do that as they might help in a way.

Injured Limping Doggie Back To Vet

After brought back Alera from treatment, a short nap, got up, called Joseph, called Chong Kooi and headed out again for Lucky, the limping doggie. This time bringing Lucky to my car was easy, Joseph just grabbed him and that's it! He was not resisting. Phew! Chong Kooi also told us that he has not been using the leg totally and still limping. That's really bad.

At the vet, x-ray was carried out and the pin or plate will only be removed by tomorrow afternoon. Dr Teoh examined Lucky and told us that the joint and muscles has became stiffer. That's not very good. The other reason Lucky was still limping might be the cause of the pin inside the leg as it irritates the movement of the joint. Anyway, we only will find out tomorrow after the surgery.

Injured Limping Doggie Finally Got Home.

Lucky ( injured limping dog) finally got home today after spending so many weeks at the vet. He was very excited to see Chong Kooi. Unfortunately we might have to wait a while until he manage to walk normally again. The vet will take out the plate inside the hind leg end of this month. He told me that after taking out the plate, Lucky may feel more comfy and the joint hopefully will work better. He also said, due to severe damage on the injured leg, the muscles has contracted, so he need more time.

That's Chong Kooi and Lucky together in the photo on the right. After this, I will be seeing them in 3 weeks time. I told Chong Kooi not to let Lucky roaming outside and keep him within the compound. I will try to check on Lucky once a week to monitor his condition. Will visit the vet on this coming Monday to pay partially Lucky's medical fee.

Injured Limping Doggie Going Home Tomorrow.

Just a quick update on the injured limping doggie. The video were shot on 29 October at the vet. In the video, you can see he is still afraid to use his injured leg. Maybe it is because it's still painful. The plate has not yet taken out and the vet will only do so probably end of this month. I am not sure why it has to be taken out and I will definitely ask the vet tomorrow. Due to the high fee involved and also limited of space for him to run about, the vet have suggested me to take him back.

I went to Chong Kooi's house just now; the man who is willing to keep him, and explained to him about the surgery progress. I also showed him some videos of the dog on my laptop too. If you have been following my videos and if you listen carefully on the third video, when the vet was doing the x-ray, he did call the dog Lucky. What a coincidence, Chong Kooi also called him Lucky too!

Tomorrow, Chong Kooi will follow along to bring Lucky back and I am sure Lucky misses home! Chong Kooi also contributed RM 100 ( Ringgit Malaysia) just now for Lucky medical fee and this is a surprise to me as he is a retiree. At first, I rejected his money but he insisted me to accept it as a token of appreciation.

AvoDerm Natural Vegetarian Adult Dog Food

Went to pet store yesterday and bought 2 large packets of cat and dog food. I feed my dogs ( Bobo, Lulu and Papi ) with the brand Addiction Holistic Vegetarian and they love it since the first day. I saw this brand, AvoDerm Natural Vegetarian for dogs and thought of giving it a try so that they have variety. Sometimes they also eat what I eat such as brown rice, potatoes, salads and they what love the most, is mock soya meat from my vegetarian cafe. Every time when I buy food from vegetarian cafe, I will rinse them in hot water just to make them less oily/greasy before feeding. They also eat green apples too! Bobo usually will finish the whole apple in a minute!

I tried AvoDerm Natural Vegetarian on Ah Gal too and as you can see in the video, she also eats them :). She is totally on meat base diet that the neighborhood lady always feed her. But recently almost everyday around 4 pm or so she will definitely come up for her snack, tea break biscuit snack :). That is why I just gave her only a cup full of the food. I didn't shoot the gang as they already finished their food.

I have stocked up the kitties food too :)

It always a debatable issue when you try to feed your companion animals with different diet such as vegetarian/vegan diet instead of meat-base diet. Below are some links worth reading about vegetarian for dogs and cats.

Vegetarian Dog Food
Vegetarian Society UK
PeTA Factsheets
HelpingAnimals dot Com

Companies that sell vegan dog and cat food.

Evolution Diet
F & O Alternative Pet Products
Harbingers of a New Age
Natural Life Pet Products
Nature’s Recipe
Newman’s Own
Pet Guard
Wow-Bow Distributors
Wysong Corporation

It's too bad that my country pet stores do not sell vegan/vegetarian cat food. Not a single brand.

White Dog Crossing Rainbow Bridge; We Were Too Late.

Picked up Joseph at 4 pm today and we headed to the street to locate him. Since he was not there, we asked one of the neighbors and found out he might be roaming behind the residential area. We drove here and there but with no luck finding him. After a few rounds, from a distance we saw a dog sniffing on something, I couldn't see what it was as my vision was covered by cars around that area. We drove slowly towards the dog and with shock and sad at the same time, we saw the white dog lying there not moving at all. We knew instantly he has gone and the worst part is NOBODY cares! Nobody, I mean he collapsed at the side of the main entrance and I am pretty sure there must be lot of cars go in and out, but nobody even bothered. His body has turn cold and stiff.

We stayed there for a while and Joseph made a call to the council department asking them to come and collect the carcass. The two council workers in yellow t-shirts in the video are not from the animal department though, they are just ordinary worker that sweep the road daily. I deliberately let them carried the carcass so that you can see how our council workers deal with carcass. The man in brown shirt is the one of the council supervisors and his team who deal with animal carcass has gone home after 5 pm, that is why the yellow t-shirt workers had to help out since they were there sweeping the road.

I feel bad and so is Joseph and Khairul not because of the council workers but because of the people who live there do nothing at all to help this suffering animal. I took a lot of photos and videos to show to my vet asking him why this could happened suddenly within a day. He said it might have been hypothermia since he has been exposing to rains yesterday and also this morning. Another reason I took photos is because tomorrow morning, I will pick up Joseph and we will be heading to dog licensing department to trace this owner and file a cruelty report against him. He has to be punished for neglecting and abuse!

' Ah Girl ' And Her Grown Up ' Son '

If you have been following my videos, Joseph and I have brought a homeless dog for spaying from my neighborhood in May. I called her ' Ah Girl ' and the lady who shared the spaying fee has been keeping her male puppy. She also provides Ah Girl food and sometimes shelter, but Ah Girl choose to roam around the alley and recently, most of the time she will come up to my apartment and sleep in front of my door step and block half the corridor due to her size. Yesterday the lady let the puppy and her other dogs out for walk and this was my first time after so many months seeing him. He has grown up alot and got taller too. Very playful indeed and friendly. I managed to capture a short video of him and some photos just to share :)

You can view the previous video here when he was a small puppy ( time 01:43 )

Papi Having Difficulty On Getting Up.

When I woke up this morning, Papi was very quiet laying down in her cage and this surprised me as she is the nosiest in the house and will bark very loud to wake everyone up. I carried her out and she started to cry when I put her down. There were no sign of injury at all but she just couldn't stand up. I tried helping her to get up so that I could wear diaper on her. At first I thought maybe the nails were causing the problem since they were a bit long, I trimmed them and the problem still the same. After a while I called the vet and ask his opinion and showed him the video above. He gave me some pain killer for Papi and I will see how it goes tomorrow. If there is no improvement on Papi after a few tablets, I will take her to the vet and do some thorough check up.

Injured Limping Doggie Operated

Finally, after waiting for almost a month, the doc has operated the limping doggie. The surgery was complicated but at least it is over now. All we have to do now is wait until the doggie gain back some energy and able to get up and walk again. I have no details of how the surgery was perform but I do think the doc has insert some kind of plate to join up the broken bones. However he did told me that since the doggie has not been using the leg for so long, the muscle around that area has shrink down and walking might not be as 'smooth' as a normal doggie.

Light Yellow Puppy Crossing Over Rainbow Bridge.

It really hit me hard when I came back to my house and look again the photo and a small clip that I have taken just now while at the vet to see the puppy for the last time. Khairul, Joseph and I were all there. The vet called me at 3.15pm and from her tone, I knew something was bad. The condition of the puppy was critical yesterday midnight and the surgery has to be carried out immediately or else he would have been suffered greatly and died. The vet finished the surgery at 2 am and she did every thing she could. The puppy was very weak in the next morning and when she checked him again after that, he already crossing over the rainbow bridge. It's really hard to accept this reality when I watched back all the videos that I have filmed during the rescue and all the updates we have been through, somehow I can still feel he is alive somewhere, well not in that form of body but somewhere else. He is now for sure in a better place.

Light Yellow Puppy Update 01Oct2007

Bad News! This is not good. First of all, the surgery previously did not fail. There were skin infection right from the start due to the bite. The inner stitches burst because of the pus that's accumulated around the inner stitches. The skin that was used for stitching the inner part were bad skin and there was not enough healthy skin to be pulled and stitch up. At this moment we need to wait for the bad skin on the outside to peeled off and wait for the healthy skin to grow so that it can be pulled for stitching. After that back to the surgery again to stitch the inner wound. According to the doc, he is lucky to be alive till now and currently a bandage is wrap around the 'burst' area. Intestine seems to be working well as he can eat and poop. Hopefully he will recover. This is the best explanation I can explain and thanks to Joseph for writing the explanation as I was not very sure what's the vet was talking about.

Senior Dog and Taoism Parade

While Khairul and I were heading to our usual vegan meal night spot, we were stuck in a massive jam. There was a taoism parade going on a few hundred meters away just in front of us. When we reached a junction ahead, we saw a senior dog lying on the pavement of grass and I thought she was resting but Khairul asked me to pull over just to make sure she's alright. As we turned into the road, I parked my car and then we walked towards the doggie. From far she seemed okay to me, just lying there without movement. I didn't realize she has cataract on one eye and both her back legs were limping at that time. Since there was a parade going on, I just took some video of it. I think they were probably from taoism religion and have no idea what was the parade all about. After a while, I turned back to the dog and when she started to get up, I became more convinced of her injury. She was limping and trying to cross the road. Without delay, I walked across and approached her slowly and tried to be friendly. Fortunately Joseph is staying nearby and we have called him to bring a leash for us. He came after few minutes with a leash and we brought her straight to the vet.

There's nothing much the doc could do as she told us it might be arthritis. However she trimmed her nails just to make them shorter as they were all very long and curly. We couldn't do much and we have to let her off where we have found her, but of course at safer place nearby. We gave her some dry kibbles and water too. After few minutes she headed towards a small house which we think she must came from there. The house looks like a small storage house with nobody at night time. I will check on her from time to time since I always pass that road.

A Life Connected
